Discover Lake Massawippi and its surrounding villages

Lake Massawippi is undoubtedly one of the Eastern Townships’ gems. Bordered by the municipalities of North Hatley, Ayer’s Cliff, Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, Hatley, and Hatley Township, it offers a wide range of activities for residents and visitors alike.

“Massawippi” comes from the Abenaki language and means “big, deep lake.” With a maximum depth of over 80 meters, this magnificent body of water covers almost 19 square kilometres.

Pike, bass, Salmonidae, and yellow perch make this lake particularly popular with sport fishermen. Several fishing tournaments are held there every year.

Lake Massawippi is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or even paddleboarding.

In autumn, Lake Massawippi is an important stopover for migratory birds. Birdwatchers can observe snow geese, bustards, great blue herons, and several species of ducks.

For cyclists, “Les grandes fourches, “a fifty-kilometre loop, links Sherbrooke to North Hatley and other parts of the region. In winter, part of the bike path is open for cross-country skiing.
