Artesian wells issues

On World Water Day, March 22, UNESCO presented a world report on the current state of water supplies and what lies ahead. In this newsletter, we will give you an update on the situation. Enjoy your reading!

Growing demand for potable water

The problem could affect both urban and rural residents. The demand for drinking water in urban centers has been increasing for several years, as has the percentage of the population who lack it. Since rural resources are sometimes used to supply the cities, farmers and rural residents are seeing their water supply reduced.

What about surface wells & artesian wells

Although surface wells and artesian wells do not draw from the same sources as municipal facilities, more and more wells are running dry in recent years. The decrease in precipitation is having a direct impact on the water table, which is no longer able to replenish as it once did. To remedy the situation, some owners have to build new, deeper wells or have theirs filled by specialists in order to meet their needs.

These inconveniences are observed throughout Quebec, including the Eastern Townships. A recent study by the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) shows that the groundwater in certain sectors of the Eastern Townships is contaminated with arsenic and manganese, two metals whose consumption can be problematic in the long term. A pilot project was launched this week to assist owners of wells whose water could be naturally contaminated by these heavy metals.
